When local girl Loren includes Mara in a traditional Blackfeet Giveaway to honor Loren’s missing sister, Mara thinks she’ll finally make some friends on the Blackfeet reservation.

Instead, a girl from the Giveaway, Samantha White Tail, is found murdered.

Because the four members of the Giveaway group were the last to see Samantha alive, each becomes a person of interest in the investigation. And all of them—Mara, Loren, Brody, and Eli—have a complicated history with Samantha.

Despite deep mistrust, the four must now take matters into their own hands and clear their names. Even though one of them may be the murderer.

Looking For Smokes by K.A. Cobell

Looking for Smoke by K.A. Cobell is a mystery that ties together elements of friendship, betrayal, and identity against the a Native American reservation known as black feet. The story follows Mara Racette, once a girl who felt alienated and excluded from the reservation, now got invited to a traditional giveaway; unexpectedly, a girl was murdered during the giveaway. Suddenly, Mara and three other teens find themselves suspects since they were the last ones to interact with this girl, they need to figure this out quick before another tragedy occurs. The Author's writing is atmospheric, capturing both the beauty and the pain of reservation life. The setting feels alive, and it adds rich layers of cultural significance to the mystery. Mara’s character is honest, and full of heart, making her a great protagonist to root for. Each character feels realistic, carrying their own secrets and struggles, which keeps the reader doubting each of them to be or not to be the killer. The story moves at a steady pace, with plenty of twists and emotional development in the process of looking for smokes which in this case symbolizes hints and signs that pieces together the murder mystery. The Author balances the suspense of the investigation with explorations of the challenges Indigenous teens face today. Loyalty, justice, and self discovery are important themes throughout the story. Looking for Smoke is a powerful debut that offers more than just a thrilling mystery, it’s a story about belonging and survival. Fans of murder and twist books like "one of us is lying" will find a lot to love here, also great for people who loves mysteries with social and cultural relevance.
