Once Upon a Broken Heart Review

Stephanie Garber's "Once Upon a Broken Heart" is an enchanting fantasy novel filled with love, betrayal, and dramatic plot twists. The story follows Evangeline Fox, a 17 year old girl who believes strongly at true love and fairytales. When she realizes that the boy she loves is about to marry someone else, her heart breaks. With her heart set on getting her happy fairytale ending, she makes a dangerous deal with a Fate - Jacks, the Prince of Hearts. She asks him to stop the wedding no matter the cost, but doesn't stop the consequences. Jacks, the exact opposite of sweet Evangeline, is clever, dangerous, and complex. He uses Evangeline's predicament to his advantage, leaving the reader second guessing his intentions. The storyline continues to unfold dramatically, involving unexpected plot twists, leaving the reader invested. Garber's descriptive writing allows the reader to picture every scene with ease, and her deliberate wording triggers emotions in the readers, allowing them to empathize with the characters. Though the book ends on a cliffhanger, it sets the reader up to dive right into the second book and continue reading with ease. Garber's magical setting makes the book feel like a fairytale itself, reflecting Evangeline's desires. Overall, the book is perfect for fans of novels that include a mix of high fantasy aspects as well as romance - especially fans of the book "Caraval", since it connects to it in many ways. While the book has an extremely slow burn to it, the ending is very much worth it.
