Owl, the story's protagonist, lost her hearing as a result of her father's early domestic violence. She is responsible for the farm and attends education in addition to living with her uncle. When sugaring season arrives, her uncle requires assistance from the soon-to-be love interest, who is a total stranger. Cody, the stranger, has experienced tragedy in the past. Owl describes Cody to be one of few people to truly understand her. Through their shared traumas, they become closer, and Owl is finally able to confide in someone about her difficulties. There are many potential points of conflict on this romantic journey through the trauma that brought them together. This tale covers many subjects and gives a lot of deaf representation in addition to other traumatic backgrounds. The small town setting was also very cozy, as well as the topic of the sugaring season. Which hints at the tittle that during this season a lot was going to go down. The book had a fantastic message and story line, despite the use of occasionally difficult-to-understand language. It is unusual for a story's protagonist to be deaf, so it was fascinating to see how she perceived various difficulties. There were several themes that were involved in this book more than what would be expected, it covered many teen lifestyle issues such as love and standing up for what you believe in. But it also involved more serious topics, and I enjoyed how the author balanced both of these issues. With Owl being such an independent character, it was nice to see her take charge and understand who she is. This book's cover art is absolutely stunning, and the story line is incredibly intriguing thanks to Owl's journey through the aftermath of her trauma, finding love, and dealing with her deafness.
