About This Book

he first in a YA political fantasy duology about a fierce princess determined to bring lasting peace to her kingdom regardless of the cost to her heart--from C.J. Redwine, the author of the Defiance series and the New York Times bestselling Ravenspire series. Princess Charis Willowthorn is the dutiful sword of Calera. Raised to be ruthless and cunning, her only goal is to hold her war-torn kingdom together long enough to find a path toward peace with their ancient foe Montevallo, even if the cost is her own heart. When violence erupts in the castle itself, nearly killing the queen, Charis must assume her mother's duties and manage both the war and her kingdom. But as an unseen enemy begins sinking Calera's ships, Charis realizes a threat much greater than Montevallo is coming for her people. So she forms a plan. By day, she is Calera's formidable princess intent on forging an alliance with Montevallo. By night, she disguises herself as a smuggler and roams the sea with a trusted group of loyalists, hunting for their new enemies. And through it all, she accidentally falls in love with the wrong boy. But her enemies are much closer than Charis realizes, and her heart isn't the only thing she has left to lose.

I will be needing the second book as soon as it's released.

In truth, I wasn’t too interested in this type of novel, however, the ending of this book has me so hooked, and I can’t wait to read more. Rise of the Vicious Princess takes place in a fictional country called Calera, which is at war with the country Montevallo. The Princess in question is Charis, who is a very strong willed character, never backing down from a challenge. Growing up, her mother has drilled into her that people will never like her for her, and that they’d actually want something in return. In this, she has learned to hide her emotions, turning her heart to ice to keep it from breaking. However, once she meets who her bodyguard is, that ice begins to melt. Throughout the story, Charis works to try and end the war between the countries, and gets closer with Tal, the one keeping her safe. He is the only one, besides her father, that sees the real her, and not just her royalty. However, it is the royal's duty to her people, and not her heart, so she tries to keep him at a distance. The story is interesting, having created different creatures with different goals in mind, and an unrelenting king who won’t have mercy on Charis’ people. However, the story is very slow in the beginning, making it hard to keep reading. I have to say, this wasn’t one of my favorite books. The book didn’t even fit the synopsis until the last hundred pages. And only then did the book get interesting.
