‘Fat Angie: Homecoming’ by E.E. Charlton-Trujillo

Charlton-Trujillo’s novel, ‘Fat Angie: Homecoming’, is a treat for both fans of the previous ‘Fat Angie’ works as well as those who read ‘Homecoming’ as a standalone novel. Though references are made to previous books in the series, and much of this novel’s plot is dependent on previous events, enough context is given in ‘Homecoming’ for it to function as a standalone. The story follows main character Angie, who’s stuck in a love triangle between her first love and her current crush. Angie’s interpersonal conflict throughout the story is deciding who to romantically pursue. Meanwhile, she tries to win a music competition with a band she lazily puts together. Angie’s relationship with her abusive mother is a grimly realistic underscore to the otherwise fairly light-hearted teen drama. The way Angie’s behavior is affected by her familial problems, and how those behaviors affect those around her, is by far the most interesting development to track throughout the story, and Charlton-Trujillo weaves it together beautifully. This novel has sympathetic and in-depth characters, explores diverse dynamics between said characters, and overall has a nice flow. The only downside is the boring and redundant dialogue that persists during certain emotional beats in the narrative. The dialogue feels bland and impersonal to the characters, despite how strongly their contributions to the plot and internal thought descriptions fit them. This has been a persistent problem throughout the previous Fat Angie books as well. The way the characters speak feels artificial and as though the author doesn’t actually have a good grasp on teenage slang or vocabulary.

Fat Angie: Homecoming by E.E. Charlton-Trujillo.

The book Fat Angie: Homecoming by e.E. Charlton-Trujillo, is the third book from the Fat Angie series. But you didn’t have had to read the first two ones, it’s easy to catch up on. It’s definitely a must-read if you're looking for an emotional rollercoaster to enjoy. The book starts with our main character Angie who just had a video go viral, people are now looking at her completely differently. Although she still is haunted by her sister’s death. With all this internet fame and the support of her new girlfriend Jamboree, she decided to get together a band. When her ex KC comes back, things are about to get out of hand. Angie now has to deal with her feelings for both KC and Jamboree. As well as watching her mother still suffer after her sister's death. And now that she is finally confident about her size, she isn’t sure if her mother feels the same way. Only adding even more to the stress she feels. Overall, I had a great time reading this book you can come from having a good laugh to happiness, then dealing with grief and heartbreak. Especially Angie’s confidence really shines through as you’re reading on. The love triangle between Angie, KC, and Jamboree is one of the highlights; where throughout reading the book you can’t predict what’s going to happen. If you’re interested in an inspirational story or even a complicated romance with all the drama, then this book is certainly for you. I give the book three stars.
