The Samosa Rebellion: Book Review

“The Samosa Rebellion”, written by Shanti Sekaran, is a light-hearted tale about a child’s rebellion against the government through creative means. Muki Krishnan was living happily in his small, exciting town of Mariposa until his Paati arrived. That is, his grandmother. After living for so long in India, she was finally here in Mariposa, to live with Muki and his parents. However, after her arrival, strange things happen in Mariposa. The citizens of Mariposa, who have been living as equals for centuries, are suddenly classified into groups. The native Mariposans are “Butterflies,” and immigrants are deemed “Moths.” When Muki discovers a concentration camp that these supposed “Moths” will be sent to, he develops a plan to sneak out of the country back to India. When he meets the General, who happens to be the father of his friend, Tinley, things get complicated as the cold general and Muki duke it out over Mariposa, and more importantly, racism. This book is an eye-opener to the xenophobia seen towards immigrants. In a peppy and kid-friendly manner, the author describes issues such as racism and xenophobia in a format that is understandable and neutral, adding in quirky humor and life lessons along the way. This book is a solid 10/10. Recommended read for any age, but especially children. The reading style is perfect for children to comprehend as it is very easy to understand. Anyone who reads this book will walk away enlightened with more knowledge than before about the horrors committed against immigrants, and how we as a society can stop them from happening.
