New Jersey's Role in the Underground Railroad

Wednesday, June 12, 7:00pm

Please join us for a virtual lecture on the struggles and triumphs experienced by those traveling the Underground Railroad to freedom.  From the beginning of African enslavement in America, attempts to escape from bondage were a frequent form of resistance though dangerous and strongly suppressed. What became known as the Underground Railroad was a network of meeting points, secret routes, and safe houses used by enslaved people of African descent to escape into northern states and Canada. Dr. Linda Caldwell Epps will discuss New Jersey’s role in helping runaway slaves escape northward to freedom before and during the Civil War.
