Please join us for a virtual lecture on the struggles and triumphs experienced by those traveling the Underground Railroad to freedom. From the beginning of African enslavement in America, attempts to escape from bondage were a frequent form of resistance though dangerous and strongly suppressed. What became known as the Underground Railroad was a network of meeting points, secret routes, and safe houses used by enslaved people of African descent to escape into northern states and Canada. Dr. Linda Caldwell Epps will discuss New Jersey’s role in helping runaway slaves escape northward to freedom before and during the Civil War.
Dr. Linda J. Caldwell Epps is President and CEO of 1804 Consultants and a founding member of the Sankofa Collaborative. She brings to clients more than 45 years of experience working with educational and cultural institutions, including The New Jersey Historical Society, a statewide museum, library, and educational facility, where she served as President and CEO.
