Lost Souls Memorial Project Event

Sep 12 - 3:00pm to 4:00pm
In conjunction with the East Brunswick Public Library, Lost Souls Public Memorial Project will be mounting a Remembrance Exhibit to inform, inspire, and engage the local community. Knowing our history, its triumphs and its tragedies, allows us to chart a course for a more just future. Throughout September, the Library will host an exhibit about the Lost Souls - at least 137 African American women, men, and children in 1818, held captive in the home of a Middlesex County judge in what is now East Brunswick. Kidnapped, held captive, then sent into permanent slavery in the Deep South when freedom was theirs in New Jersey.

"This is part of all our history - the diabolical workings of the slave ring and its statewide network; the resilience and resistance of the Lost Souls; the outrage that brought the slave ring to an end - and we all must know it,"; says Reverend Karen G. Johnston, President of the Board of the Lost Souls Public Memorial Project.

A special event to mark the exhibit is being held on Sunday, September 12, 3-4pm, in the meeting rooms at the library. Additional activities for younger ages are on the library's calendar for early September. Come on September 12 to hear more of this history. Come meet members of the Lost Souls Public Memorial Project who have brought this history to light. Come
learn about what you can do to be a part of building a memorial to those 137.

The exhibit will be on display throughout the whole month of September.
