Summer 2023 International Film Festival

The International Film Festival returns to East Brunswick Public Library!

July 11   2 pm and 7 pm
The Duke--UK—2022--96 minutes—Rated R—Comedy 
Kempton Bunton, a 60-year old taxi driver from Newcastle, steals a painting from London's National Gallery and holds it hostage to convince the government to provide free television for the elderly. Based on a true story, this comedy stars Jim Broadbent and Helen Mirren.

July 18   2 pm and 7 pm
Parallel Mothers—Spain—2021--120 minutes—Rated R—Drama
Two very different expectant mothers, middle-aged Janis and adolescent Ana, share a hospital room while they await the birth of their babies and form a close bond that complicates and changes both their lives.  Written and directed by Pedro Almodovar, this drama stars Academy Award-nominated actress Penelope Cruz.

The Truffle Hunters—Italy—2021—84 minutes—Not Rated--Documentary
In the forests of Piedmont, Italy, a handful of aging men and their dogs hunt for the rare white Alba truffle, following a tradition passed down through generations. In this acclaimed documentary, filmmakers Michael Dweck and Gregory Kershaw follow the hunters as they bring their truffles from the forest floor to the restaurant plate, capturing a precarious ritual constantly threatened by greed and outside influences.

Polite Society—UK—2023—103 minutes—PG-13—Action/adventure/Comedy
Pakistani teenager Ria Khan, who believes she must save her older sister from an inappropriate marriage, recruits her friends and uses her skills as a martial artist to pull off an ambitious wedding heist in the name of sisterhood.  This comic action-adventure movie mashup is writer/director Nida Manzoor’s debut feature film.

One Fine Morning—France—2022—112 minutes—Rated R—Drama
Sandra, a widowed mother who also cares for her dying father, reconnects with an old friend and embarks on an affair that reaffirms her love of life. Directed by Mia Hansen-Love and starring acclaimed actress Lea Seydoux, this poignant drama won Best European Film at Cannes.

August 15   2 pm and 7 pm
Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris—UK—2022—115 minutes—PG—Comedy
A cleaning lady in 1950s London works, starves and gambles to raise the funds to travel to Paris and buy a designer dress, a purchase that will change not only her own life but the future of the House of Dior. Adapted from Paul Gallico’s novel of the same name, this heartwarming film stars Lesley Manville and Isabelle Hubert.
