The Rutgers Institute for Health, Health Care Policy, and Aging Research is partnering with the East Brunswick Library to offer free health screenings this fall. Knowing your numbers are important to ensure healthy living, but this should not be in place of visiting your primary care physician. We will be screening blood pressure, HbA1c, and Lipids:

  • Blood Pressure Screening: A blood pressure test measures the pressure in your arteries as your heart pumps. High blood pressure greatly increases your risk of heart disease and stroke.
  • HbA1c: A1C test your average blood sugar levels over the past two to three months.
  • Lipids:
    • Total Cholesterol: This number is the total amount of fat-carrying proteins in your blood. This number measures both the good and bad fat-carrying proteins. Higher levels may indicate higher risk for heart disease.
    • HDL: This is the “good” cholesterol in your blood. Higher levels may indicate lower risk for heart disease, and lower levels may indicate higher risk for heart disease.
    • TRIGLYCERIDES: Higher levels indicate over-production of cholesterol, or a lessened ability to clear cholesterol from your body. Higher levels may indicate higher risk for heart disease.
    • LDL: This is a “bad” cholesterol in your blood. High levels "clog" or lead to a buildup of cholesterol in your arteries. Higher levels may indicate higher risk for heart disease.

This is a non-fasting screening.
