Description:  Forty-five men have been president of the United States. Excluding the present president, 8 died in office leaving 36 that survived their terms but 4 died very soon thereafter. 1 became a drunk, 2 bankrupt, 1 a traitor, 1 a Congressman, 1 a Senator and 1 the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Many sold their name and notoriety, some became faculty members, remained involved in politics and tried to run again for president while one succeeded winning a nonconsecutive term, and many built libraries to document their accomplishments. 1 had his postal mail franking privileges removed, 1 had his army rank restored so he could receive a pension and another lobbied to have a law enacted six years after he left the presidency so that ex-presidents would receive a pension (including him) and have certain expenses reimbursed. One thing they all had in common after their terms were completed is that they no longer lived rent free in government housing and they had to make a living. This program will look at their financial affairs, investments and the everyday financial and health problems they encountered and how some of their final days were spent. Some of their problems can also be related to some of the issues many confront today without the celebrity status former presidents had. This will be an interesting yet practical trip through history with an extensive handout provided to attendees.
